When we moved into our house, there was a whole stack of unused tiles and backsplash from a recent renovation left for us in the shed.  Along with all sorts of other household items we will probably never need nor touch.

After us letting the backsplash sit there for 3 years untouched, I decided to do finally something with it!  It really is a nice backsplash, so it was just a shame to not upcycle it.  The small tiles of the backsplash really opened up my options.

Since we are thinking of teaching baby girl a few of her letters soon, I made upcycled backsplash magnets out of the little squares.  She can then put these little squares together to make the letters of the alphabet on our fridge or her DIY kid’s magnetic board.

Here’s a quick tutorial I put together to show you how to repurpose backsplash.  If you don’t have any laying around, you can usually find some on a dell at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Supplies:

  • Backsplash tiles (mine were all little squares as shown)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive magnetic tape (mine was 1″ wide and from Walmart)

Backsplash Upcycle to Magnets – How To:

I first had to clean the backsplash tiles and let them dry overnight.

Then, I cut out individual tiles from the backsplash.

I also cut out squares of magnetic strip in the same size as the back of the tiles and removed the backing. Here’s also a picture of the magnetic tape I used.

After that, I glued the sticky side of the magnetic square to the back of the tiles.

I repeated and repeated and repeated until I came out with lots of tiles. These tiles are now at the bottom of the fridge and can be used to make pictures and letters!

**And as a note, of course, a stronger magnet backing will make a stronger magnet to hold several layers of paper on the refrigerator. I was going for something that was cheap and would work well for the purposes of just making small magnets.

These DIY backsplash letter magnets eventually became a part of my toddler’s craft room remodel, which included a pretty awesome DIY magnetic board.  Check it out!
