I don’t know if this applies to all children, but finding a gift for my mom is one of the most difficult and torturous tasks. My sister and I dread birthdays and Christmas for this exact reason. And don’t even get me started on Mother’s day. My mom’s birthday is in November and then Christmas follows soon, so my sister and I start the countdown in about June for the days we have until we have to find a gift. We always try so hard to get something as soon as we can. However, it hangs over our heads for the majority of those six months of the year until we find something good.

Perhaps my sister and I put a little too much pressure on ourselves to find the perfect gift.

We always give my mom grandmother gifts now!

Our greatest revelation was that once we had kids of our own, it become a little simpler to get her gifts.

Anything Grandma is always the way to go.  Especially a DIY Christmas gift for Grandma!  When I had my son, I took full advantage of that and my sister did the same. Trust me, I think my mom has everything you can get from Shutterfly just from my sister and I alone. They really do have some great stuff and finding a coupon is extremely easy. However, even this can get a little redundant. I mean, you only have so much space for picture frames and you really only need one or two mugs.

One year, I was so stuck on finding the perfect gift. I had no idea what to get. I figured that it is always more meaningful to make a gift instead of buying one. Now, if you keep up with the blog, you know my DIYs don’t always come out so perfect. However, this was definitely one of the more successful ones. So, I made this for Mom and it was a hit! It was decently easy to make and didn’t cost too much using coupons at Hobby Lobby.

My mom liked it so much that I made one for my mother-in-law as well. There are so many different reasons you could make it for someone. It is the gift that you can customize to fit whatever you need. It could be great for a new grandmother, a baby shower, a dog lover, etc.

Materials

Most of my supplies came from Hobby Lobby.  You can find similar supplies at Michael’s, Joann, or other craft stores as well.

  • 4″ x 16″ Routered Signboard
  • Paint brush
  • Metallic paint (or color of choice)
  • Twine
  • Burlap flower embellishment
  • Chipboard letters
  • 5 mini clothespins
  • Hot glue gun

How to make a grandkids photo holder:

Begin by hot gluing your embellishment to the end of the signboard. Then, start adding your letters using hot glue gun. Make sure to lay out your letters before gluing just to check spacing and to see if they all fit.

After your letters, add the twine at the bottom. I used the hot glue gun to attach both ends. Once you space out the clothespins, you can add some more glue for support in between. Before adding the clothespins, I painted them a metallic color. Metallic matched each of my embellishments. However, you can really use any color you want.

Make sure to safely secure the clothespin under the twine. The clothespins are not actually hanging from the twine. Add some glue and slip them underneath. If you add too much weight, the twine will just fall right off.

Add a few pictures to the bottom and you are done!  What a fun DIY Christmas gift for Grandma!

Overall, they both turned out really well and are a great way to add a few pictures of the grandkids in their house.
