One Fourth of July tradition that we’ve instituted in our family is letting my daughter sleep on a special pillowcase leading up to the holiday.

Our Fourth of July Traditions

This pillowcase is the first of our little family’s Fourth of July traditions.  While we do usually go to my aunt’s house to grill out and swim, that’s not something we do just as a family of four.  And with my younger daughter being less than a year old, fireworks are still not an option. She is a total grump past her bedtime and wouldn’t make it until sundown.

I’d like to eventually get to the point of having a fun Fourth of July meal plan as well as some other fun activities planned every year.  However, for now, a pillowcase is going to have to do!

Sewing a Fourth of July Pillowcase

This holiday pillowcase tradition started a few months ago when I decided I was going to make my daughter a pillowcases for every holiday.

First up was the Easter pillowcase.   As I mentioned in that post, a few weeks before the holiday rolls around, I planned to get the pillowcase out and let her sleep with it until the day of the holiday.

I’m hoping this will help her be even more excited for the upcoming holiday as well as give her a concept of timing. For example, Valentine’s Day happens after Christmas, and then comes Easter, and Fourth of July.

Now that the 4th of July is coming up, it’s time for me to break out the patriotic pillowcase in preparation of this occasion!  I was a little late on getting this one done…but I still made it before the holiday!

Here’s a closeup of the cute fabric.  My daughter loves the red, white, and blue patriotic puppies!  We are a real dog loving household over here.

The fabric came from Joann, which has seasonal fabric year long at our local craft store.

As with my Easter pillowcase, I used the measurements and instructions for this DIY pillowcase tutorial here.  It was very fast to make, as in less than 15 minutes total.  The hardest part of the whole project was finding the perfect Fourth of July themed fabric.

Happy 4th of July!  What Fourth of July traditions do you have in your family?
