Preparing for the Staar test is one of the most difficult tasks. There are so many different factors to focus on in order to make sure your students are successful. You have to look at learning standards for each student, checking for mastery. This is in no way easy to do.

At my school, for the entire month of April, we are working on Staar Review. Yes, I think it is ridiculous as well. However, instead of teaching to the test, I make sure my kids have mastered all third grade material. As I have mentioned in previous posts, I like to ensure that my students have mastered the basic concept before checking for application. The only way for me to do this, is to work with them on each specific TEK. We use TEKS in Texas as our learning standards. However, you can easily do this for common core or your state’s standards.

These days, it is very hard to find a workbook that doesn’t have a mistake in it. This is a whole other issue for me. I don’t know why, but that is one of my biggest pet peeves. I mean, come on, these people get paid the big bucks.

These resources are some of the best ones I have found over the years. Now, with some of these, you have to buy a minimum amount, but if your school will pay for it, they are definitely worth it. I also think that the more resources you have, the better. Now, quite a few of these are broken apart by standard so it makes your job much easier.  TEXT-1-768x644 STAAR Test Prep Ideas

Now, even though I am writing about these workbooks, I am in no way encouraging the use of worksheets. These are really used more for intervention purposes or an overall review for the kids. Parents, these are great resources for you as well! Preparing your kids and working with them at home will not only make your child’s teacher’s life much easier, but also encourage a sense of determination.
